![]() ![]() "Trapped" began as a tense (if ludicrous) story of infidelity, but it evolved into pure farce, as more characters came out of the closet: literally (Rufus), figuratively (Chuck) and ridiculously ("Not only is there a man in this cabinet/ But the man is a midget"). Kelly and a small cast lip-synched the lyrics while acting out the story. The first five chapters appeared on his 2005 album, "TP.3 Reloaded," (Jive) those and seven more were compiled on a DVD, in which Mr. Then came "Trapped in the Closet," the plot-packed song that keeps growing. Biggs saga, and he has recorded a multi-character opera version of one of his own biggest hits, "I Believe I Can Fly." (That version was the soundtrack to the show-closing evangelical cartoon for his 2001 tour.) Kelly has long dabbled in theater he teamed with Ronald Isley for the Mr. Show Biz." And at the end, he offered an accurate assessment: "Two hours of fun and excitement." A glowing sign announced his latest alter ego: "R. At Radio City Music Hall on Tuesday night, he took a good-humored, hugely entertaining and totally unpredictable stroll through his career, reviving old hits while emphasizing his current obsessions. The sex scandal that threatened to derail his career in 2002 ended up doing the opposite: it made him more productive, more successful and, somehow - maybe because more people began paying attention to his excellent music - more respected than ever before. Kelly, the legendarily freaky R&B star, long ago established himself as one of the greatest singer-songwriters of his generation. Even his jokey announcements sounded like hit singles. ![]() And who else could deliver it as a song that sounded so good? "They said to me, 'No feeling yourself around this area,' " he crooned, tracing the boundary with his palm. But surely few of his contemporaries would be bold enough to deliver that announcement in song. Kelly isn't the only singer who would interrupt his own concert to make an announcement like that. "They said 'Robert, you're 25 minutes into the show and you're already getting too freaky.' " ![]()
